"PROMULGACION DE LA CONSTITUCION DE 1917"

Causes

After Venustiano Carranza defeated the Zapatista and Villista forces, he was able to make a reunion with the Congress, whose intention was to correct the mistakes in the 1857 Constitution and make a new one that would give importance to the interests of the Mexicans, especially the most vulnerable people, the civil war that lasted years made the country a disaster; the people were dying due to hunger and sickness. For that reason, the “Congreso Constituyente” was formed by people from different social sectors in 1916.

Main facts

The meetings were realized at the Gran Teatro Iturbide in Queretaro, there were two opposites groups, one of them were the radicals who agreed to don’t give rights to the people, the other were the minority which were conformed by the ideas of protecting the workers.

The most important laws of this constitution are the separation between the church and the state, the individual garanties, the government separation in the “3 poderes”, the anti reelection of the president, the school shouldn’t teach anything related with any religion and should be free, the work period should be of 8 hours and every mexican have liberty of expression and more.

Consequences

The Mexican Constitution, released on may 5th 1917, marked the end of the “Revolucion Mexicana” and the beginning of a new era, this document was one of the first in the world on establishing social garanties, which is shown in the article 27 and 123.

If this constitution hadn’t been released, we wouldn’t have advanced as a society with other rights that we have right now as the women vote and other modifications that it have had throught the years trying to adapt this constitution to the economy and social changes.
